Gas water heater and furnace venting into chimney utility flue.
The resulting comment:
• Safety Issue: The gas furnace and water heater exhaust vent gas into the original chimney utility flue (See photo 9 page 8). Both the fireplace flue and utility flue are blocked off at the chimney top (See photo 6 page 7). The water heater and furnace exhaust gases must be venting to the basement and is likely confirmed by light headedness experienced by the inspector when inspecting the basement from the ongoing water heater operation. This is a serious health risk. The furnace was not operated as a result. A licensed HVAC contractor should be contacted to correct the venting and confirm that the older utility flue is in suitable condition for use. The furnace should also be serviced and evaluated.
