It has been a super year of inspections reminding me of 2006 and 2007. I am both thankful and grateful. Keeping up with the business without an office assistant has been a challenge. I am thankful for the part time help from Aaron over the year…almost complete in his training he will make an awesome addition to Carlson Inspection. I have this year that you have to take off time to recharge to really serve hour clients best……trips to NYC to visit my GF Debbie have filled this function well. Friends Brett and Jenkins invited me to another opportunity to really disconnect. As a child Jenkins attended a summer camp in Crossville Tn; Camp Nakawana on Lake Aloaloa.

She has a deep connection with the camp and is still in connection with most of here camp mates.  The camp is one of the largest continuously operating camp in the country.  Many of the building date to the 1920’s. Every activity is available and they offer 4 week stays.  Its super fun but the underlying propose is to churn out healthy strong and confident women; which is evidently successful if you know Jenkins. Jenkins has beat breast cancer once and is kicking a re-occarrances butt right now.   Jenkins Hardin is vibrant healthy and healed forever now…..So they have an adult camp every year which Deb and I were invited to and are attending this weekend.  It is the Eighth year of this gathering of adults with 4 camp teams created with a pirate theme to this years weekend….I am on the Poop decks…..Deb on the Winches and booty…..fitting…….An Olympic type competition including opening and closing ceremony ensued…..We came in last but my skill in Dodge all has become legendary.  Other events of note included keg kick ball……shotgun a beer and do the dizzy bat race…..pass a coconut neck to neck …..and so on.  What a great and beautiful place to recharge…and celebrate Debs birthday to boot

Back on task….the camp has the oldest 12 sided structure on the property called the Wigwam.

This is the oldest 12 sided structure in the country built in 1920…..It is of log construction with perimeter post support and a trussed ceiling supported by a central wood post.

Wigwam central support post.

The exterior gaps in the logs sports standard chinking.  The structure exhibits a measure of lean present which appears to have been remediated in 2002 with tension cables installed from the central support to the perimeter support posts…I would say adding cables to grade at the exterior on the leeward side of the lean might offer additional stability.

Home Inspection Structural Comment; Not for the Squeamish
June 26, 2020
Repair: The original fireplace chimney was essentially built into the solid masonry wall structure of the home located on the interior side of the wall (chimney not visible at exterior). The chimney no longer passes through the roof line and the chimney is not suitable for use. The top of the chimney was demo'd below the roof line elevation but was not blocked off and air sealed in the attic or at the top of the fireplaces. Currently, free air transfer occurs between the attic and living room and attic and basement as a result and is a significant energy efficiency issue bringing air with attic conditions into the home. When the HVAC system at the 1st level turns on, attic air is pulled from the attic down the flue into the living room. The attic temperature was approx. 100 deg F at the time of inspection. Loose brick is also present at the top of the flues and could be a falling hazard down the flue if dislodged. A chimney/fireplace technician should be contacted to properly block off and air seal the chimney flues and address debris. Seeing Knowing Throwing money away Inspector Bill Carlson

The single ply roofing membrane could not be inspected as the inspector did not have proper footwear. A licensed roofing contractor should be contacted to evaluate and repair as needed.
